Here is a list of terms and that you may hear while playing roulette and will help you understand the game.
1 to 18: A bet on one of the first low eighteen numbers coming up.
19 to 36: A bet on one of the last high eighteen numbers coming up.
A cheval: The French term for a split bet.
Action player: A player who bets large sums for long periods of time.
American wheel: A roulette wheel that has zero and double zero pockets.
Backtrack: The outer, stationary, rim of the roulette wheel where the ball is spun.
Bankroll: The amount of money a player brings to a game.
Biased wheel: A roulette wheel that has an imperfection causing certain numbers or section of numbers to appear at a higher frequency that probability allows for.
Black bet: A bet that the color of the next number will be black.
Chip: A small, flat colored piece of plastic used in casino games to represent a particular amount of money.
Choppy game: A session of roulette where no consistent pattern emerges.
Cold table: A table where players have been losing.
Column bet: A bet on all 12 numbers on any of the three vertical columns (such as 1-4-7-10-13-16-19-22-25-28-31-34)
Corner bet: A bet on four numbers in a square layout (for example, 7-8-10-11). The chip is placed on the corner of a group of four numbers. Also known as a 'square' bet.
Croupier: The person who handles the roulette table on behalf of the casino.
Dozen bet: A bet on one of the sequences of 12 numbers on the layout.
Drop: The total amount of bets made by the players for a particular round.
European wheel: A roulette wheel that has only a single zero. Also known as a French wheel.
Even or odd bet: A bet on an even or odd number.
Dozen bets: A bet on the first (1-12), second (13-24) or third (25-36) group of twelve numbers.
First, second and third dozen: A bet on 12 numbers.
High bet: A bet on the top eighteen numbers (19-36)
Hold: The total amount of cash the casino charges for chips to play roulette, minus the chips taken from the table by players, that is, the actual amount casino profitted.
Hot Table: An accumulation of rounds where the house makes a net loss, that is, the players win more than they lose. If 9 out of 15 rounds are won by the players, the table is considered to be a Hot Table.
House-edge: The advantage towards winning that a house gains depending on the odds.
Inside bet: A bet on any numbers on the table including 5 and 6 number bets, corner bets, straight bets and trio bets.
Layout: The roulette table pattern displaying the various betting alternatives.
Line bet: A bet on three numbers on a single horizontal line. The chip is placed at the end of the line on the edge of the number on the end. Also called a 'street' bet.
Low bet: A bet on the bottom eighteen numbers (1-18).
Odd/even bet: A bet on an odd or even number.
Outside bet: All bets placed at the edge of the table on a color, odd/even or high/low or a column bet.
Outside chances field: This is the common name of the twelve outside chances divided into two separate types of bets – six 1 to 1 bets ( red, black, odd, even, high numbers and low numbers) and six 2 to 1 ( three columns bets and three dozen bets).

Payout: The winnings a player earns.

Six line bet: A bet on two adjoining streets.
Split bet: A bet on two adjoining numbers either vertically or horizontally. The chip is placed on the line between these numbers.
Straight up bet: A bet on a single number.

Square bet: Also known as a 'corner' bet. See above.
Trio bet: A bet on the intersecting point between 0, 1 and 2, or 00, 2 and 3.
Wager: Another term for a bet.
